Description: He is tall and thin and used to be attractive until the acid that killed his master left him with disfiguring scars that give him a somewhat ghoulish visage.

BACKGROUND

Maksim was apprenticed as a scribe while still an adolescent and spent years in that trade until his magic talent was discovered by a wizard of the Order of Ariakis. The wizard, Belenos, took him on as an apprentice and he went to live with him and his other apprentice, a young woman named Rhianon who was four years older than Maksim. Rhianon was talented with blue magic but unable to work any other type. When Maksim showed an aptitude for three colors of magic, she grew jealous and resentful of him. She pretended to resolve her dislike of Maksim after Belenos harangued her about mistreating him, but secretly harbored a grudge that only grew as Belenos started paying more attention to Maksim. When Maksim was fifteen and still half-trained, Rhianon finally reached her breaking point. She used her skill with illusions and mental influence to make him think he’d killed their master (when in fact she did the deed). Rhianon told Maksim that when the Order of Ariakis found out, he would be executed. She encouraged him to run away, telling him to take a couple of Belenos’s minor magic items to help him make his own way. When someone from the Order of Ariakis showed up, she told them that Maksim had killed their master and fled. Because Belenos had no other kin, she inherited everything of his but the two items she had let Maksim take. On his own, Maksim managed to master some of the spells Belenos had begun teaching him. One of the items he took was a magic staff, which became a crutch for him in casting spells. He is currently traveling with a caravan, chasing down a rumor of a magical artifact.

PERSONALITY

He is driven by a desire to gain more magical knowledge. Through his mastery of the spells he knows as well as with time to break down the mental barriers Rhianon put in his mind, he has figured out that he didn’t kill Belenos. He’s not sure what happened, but he does know that Rhianon pinned Belenos’s death on him. His desire for revenge on Rhianon is secondary to his thirst for knowledge, but still a strong motivation for him.
